General Information

Yes. Rajaji National Park is currently open for the 2025-26 safari season. The park opens every year on November 15 and closes on June 15. Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Zone stays open until June 30 - two weeks longer than the main park.

The park remains closed from mid-June to mid-November during the monsoon season for wildlife protection and forest recovery.

Rajaji National Park is most famous for its extraordinary Asian elephant population - 350-500 wild elephants, one of India's largest. It is also India's 48th Tiger Reserve (declared 2015) with 50+ Bengal tigers and 250+ leopards.

The park is unique because it is the north-western distribution limit for both the Bengal tiger and Asian elephant in India - making it ecologically irreplaceable. It is also exceptionally accessible - just 15 km from Haridwar and 250 km from Delhi.

Quick facts: 820 sq km · Haridwar, Uttarakhand · Established 1983 · Tiger Reserve 2015 · 315+ bird species · 5 safari zones

They are the same place - both names refer to the same protected area. Rajaji was established as a National Park in 1983. In 2015, it was additionally designated a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger, making it India's 48th Tiger Reserve.

The Tiger Reserve designation brings additional protection, conservation funding, and management under the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Locals and visitors use both names interchangeably. The official name for tourism purposes is Rajaji Tiger Reserve.

Both offer great but different wildlife experiences. Here is an honest comparison:

FactorRajajiJim Corbett
Cost (group of 6)~₹567/person~₹900-1,800/person
Elephant population350-500~600 (larger area)
CrowdsLow-ModerateHigh (peak season)
Distance from Delhi250 km260 km

For elephant sightings, value for money, and solitude - Rajaji wins. For structured tiger tourism and more developed facilities - Corbett is ahead. Most serious wildlife lovers visit both.

The park is named after C. Rajagopalachari - popularly known as "Rajaji." He was a prominent Indian freedom fighter, statesman, and the last Governor-General of British India (and the first Indian to hold that post). He was also the founder of the Swatantra Party and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi.

In 1983, three wildlife sanctuaries - Rajaji, Motichur, and Chila - were merged and named Rajaji National Park in his honour.

Rajaji National Park covers 820.42 sq km of protected forest across three districts of Uttarakhand - Haridwar, Dehradun, and Pauri Garhwal. The full Tiger Reserve area including buffer zones covers approximately 1,075 sq km.

The park spans the Shivalik hills along the Himalayan foothills, featuring diverse terrain: dense sal forests, Ganga riverine grasslands, rocky ridges, and the unique Jhilmil wetland.

There are three ways to book a Rajaji safari:

  • WhatsApp (fastest): Message us on 7820012558 - instant reply, we handle all arrangements including zone selection, guide, and transport
  • Official portal: Book online via the Uttarakhand Forest Department safari booking portal - minimum 24 hours advance booking required
  • At the gate (walk-in): Available at Chilla Gate or Motichur Gate, subject to availability - not recommended Dec-Feb as slots fill the previous day

Documents needed: Aadhaar/Voter ID (Indians) or Passport (foreigners), names and ages of all visitors, email address for permit delivery.

It depends on the season:

  • December - February (peak): Book 2-3 weeks in advance. Chilla Zone morning slots fill in 24-48 hours during this period
  • Republic Day, Christmas, Holi weekends: Book 4 weeks in advance
  • March - April: 1 week usually sufficient
  • May - June (lean season): 2-3 days or even same-day walk-in possible

WhatsApp us anytime on 7820012558 and we will check real-time availability for your dates.

Yes. Elephant safari was resumed in Chilla Zone in December 2025 after a 7-year ban. It is currently the only zone in Rajaji offering elephant safaris. Morning sessions only. Availability is very limited.

To check current availability and book, WhatsApp or call us directly: 7820012558. We will give you accurate, up-to-date pricing and slot availability - it changes seasonally.

The official Uttarakhand Forest Department refund policy for the 2025-26 season:

  • 7+ days before safari: Full refund of booking amount
  • 3-6 days before: 25% cancellation charge, 75% refund
  • Within 48 hours: No refund. Rescheduling possible subject to availability

Policy is set by the Forest Department and may change. Always verify at time of booking. Bookings made through us include assisted rescheduling support.

Yes, but it depends on availability. Walk-in permits are available at Chilla Gate and Motichur Gate on the day of your visit - provided safari slots have not been fully booked in advance.

When walk-in works: March-June (lean season) - usually no problem. When walk-in is risky: December-February (peak season) - Chilla Zone morning slots frequently sell out the previous evening. Arriving at 5:40 AM with no prior booking in January is a gamble.

Our recommendation: Always pre-book. It takes 5 minutes on WhatsApp.

Safari Zones
5 Questions

Rajaji National Park has 5 main safari zones open to tourists:

  • Chilla Zone - Tigers, elephants, Ganga riverfront · 15 km from Haridwar · Most popular
  • Motichur Zone - Leopards, 200+ birds · 8 km from Haridwar (Rishikesh side)
  • Ranipur Zone - Leopards, Himalayan Goral, solitude · Least crowded
  • Jhilmil Jheel - Wetland, rare Barasingha, migratory birds · Open till June 30
  • Mohand Range - Birds, rugged forest · Dehradun side

It depends on your goal:

  • Best for tigers: Chilla Zone - highest probability, canal road, Jan-May mornings
  • Best for elephants: Chilla Zone - near-daily herds of 15-50 animals at Ganga grasslands
  • Best for leopards: Motichur or Ranipur - dense terrain, rocky outcrops
  • Best for bird watching: Jhilmil Jheel or Mohand Range
  • Best for solitude: Ranipur Zone - fewest visitors, most peaceful
  • Best for first-timers: Chilla Zone - best overall wildlife diversity

The Chilla canal road is an irrigation channel that runs through the heart of Chilla Zone. Over time, it has become a critical wildlife resource - a linear waterway serving as both a drinking station and an animal movement highway.

It is the single most productive tiger-sighting corridor in all of Rajaji National Park. Most tiger sightings in visitor logs occur within 500 metres of this road. The best time to stake it out is 7:00-8:30 AM during morning safari. Tell your guide you want to prioritise the Mandal-Mithawali canal road section.

Jhilmil Jheel is a wetland Conservation Reserve - the only one of its kind in Uttarakhand. It is the last known habitat of the Barasingha (Swamp Deer) in Uttarakhand - a critically endangered species. It is also one of North India's premier bird watching destinations with 87 migratory species arriving in winter.

Jhilmil Jheel is unique because it stays open until June 30 - two weeks after the rest of the park closes on June 15. Best visited November-February for migratory birds and winter wildlife.

Not within a single safari permit - each permit is zone-specific. However, you can book two separate safaris in different zones on the same day (morning in one zone, evening in another) by purchasing two separate permits.

Our recommended combination: Morning Chilla Zone + Evening Motichur Zone. This gives you the best of both - tiger and elephant probability in the morning, leopards and birds in the evening. WhatsApp us to arrange both bookings together.

Wildlife & Sightings
6 Questions

Yes. Rajaji Tiger Reserve has 50+ Bengal tigers. Tiger sightings are possible year-round but vary by season and zone.

Best conditions: Chilla Zone · Morning safari · January-May. The Mandal-Mithawali canal road corridor sees the most sightings. May-June (waterhole season) actually gives the highest sighting probability as tigers concentrate at limited water sources.

⚠️ Honest note: No guide can guarantee a tiger sighting. Rajaji is a wild forest - sightings depend on animal movement. What we guarantee: expert guidance, correct zone, correct timing, and maximised probability. Pugmarks, scrapes, and alarm calls are seen on most safaris.

Rajaji National Park is home to 350-500 Asian elephants - one of India's largest wild elephant populations. The park is the north-western distribution limit for Asian elephants in India.

Elephant sightings are among the most reliable wildlife experiences in Rajaji. Chilla Zone offers near-daily elephant sightings, especially large herds of 15-50 individuals along the Ganga canal road and riverine grasslands during morning safaris. Elephant safari (on elephant-back) was resumed in Chilla Zone in December 2025 after a 7-year gap.

Rajaji has 315+ documented bird species, including 87 migratory species that arrive from Central Asia and Siberia in winter (November-February).

  • Great Pied Hornbill - Mohand Range and Motichur · Large, spectacular
  • Pallas's Fish Eagle - Jhilmil Jheel · Rare and impressive raptor
  • Himalayan Pied Kingfisher - Ganga banks · Very active at sunrise
  • Crested Serpent Eagle - Forest interior · Common
  • Migratory waterfowl - Jhilmil Jheel · Ducks, herons, plovers · Nov-Feb
  • Indian Peafowl (Peacock) - All zones · Common year-round

Best birding zones: Jhilmil Jheel (wetland) and Mohand Range (forest canopy).

The Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is a critically endangered, fish-eating crocodilian - different from the mugger crocodile. It has a long, narrow snout adapted for catching fish, and is one of the world's most threatened reptile species.

Rajaji is one of India's best places to see Gharials in the wild. They sunbathe on the exposed sandbanks of the Ganga river, near Chilla Zone. Best time to spot them: November-February morning safaris when they bask in the early winter sun.

Yes - Rajaji has 250+ leopards, making it one of North India's densest leopard populations. Leopard sightings are actually more frequent than tiger sightings in Rajaji.

Best zones for leopards: Motichur Zone (leopards in trees at forest edge, early morning) and Ranipur Zone (rocky outcrops, ridgelines - classic leopard country). Evening safaris in both zones are particularly productive as leopards become active at dusk. Chilla Zone also has regular leopard sightings near the forest interior.

The Barasingha (Cervus duvaucelii), also called the Swamp Deer, is a critically endangered deer species. The name "Barasingha" means "twelve-tined" in Hindi, referring to its distinctive multi-tined antlers.

In Uttarakhand, Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Zone is the only known habitat for Barasingha. It is a truly rare sighting - a genuine privilege for wildlife lovers. The best time is November-February when the wetland's vegetation is lower and visibility is better. Jhilmil Jheel is open until June 30.

The best time to visit is November to February - cool weather, peak wildlife activity, and migratory birds. February is the single best month: mild temperatures (8-25°C), high wildlife activity, and fewer crowds than December-January.

For tiger sightings specifically, May-June is actually the best period - animals concentrate at waterholes in the pre-monsoon heat. For families, February-April is ideal. For budget travellers, April-June offers lowest hotel rates and easy safari slot availability.

Three main base options near Rajaji:

  • Haridwar city: Best base for Chilla Zone - 15 km away. Wide range of hotels at all budgets. Easy transport to the gate
  • Rishikesh: Good base for Motichur Zone - also great to combine with rafting and yoga
  • Inside the park: Forest Rest Houses (FRHs) at Chilla and Motichur offer a basic but immersive jungle stay - book well in advance via the Forest Department

Most visitors base themselves in Haridwar for Chilla safaris and return for the Ganga Aarti in the evening - a perfect combination.

Each jeep safari session lasts approximately 3.5 hours. Morning safari: 6:00 AM to 9:30 AM (in summer, 5:30 AM to 9:00 AM). Evening safari: 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

The Chilla Zone safari covers a 36 km circular route through sal forest, the Ganga canal road, and riverine grasslands, passing through Mandal, Mithawali, and Khara areas. Most visitors find 3.5 hours to be the ideal duration - enough to cover all habitat types without fatigue.

Yes - Rajaji is very safe for families. All safaris use enclosed Forest Department jeeps with a certified guide. You remain in the vehicle at all times.

Children aged 5 years and above can join safaris at 50% entry fee discount. Children below 5 are generally not recommended on 6 AM winter morning safaris (very cold). Best season for families: February-April - warm comfortable mornings, active wildlife, and newborn animals in March-April.

Rules, Safety & Photography
4 Questions
  • Stay inside the jeep at all times - getting out is strictly prohibited and dangerous
  • No loud noise, music, shouting, or sudden movements
  • No plastic carry bags or single-use plastic - Rajaji is a plastic-free zone
  • No feeding animals - even monkeys at the gate
  • No flash photography - disturbs wildlife and is strictly prohibited
  • Wear earthy tones (khaki, olive, brown) - no bright colours or white
  • No alcohol or smoking inside the park
  • Stay within the jeep throughout - no stopping outside designated areas

Violation of rules can result in permit cancellation and fines. Our guides enforce all rules - for your safety and the animals' wellbeing.

Yes - photography is allowed subject to permit fees:

  • Mobile phones: Free, no permit required
  • DSLR / SLR cameras: ₹200 (Indian) / ₹500 (foreign) per safari session
  • Video cameras: Same rates as DSLR
  • Permit must be purchased at the gate before entry

Rules: No flash photography (strictly prohibited). Camera permit is per session - if you do morning + evening, you need two permits for the same camera. Only use natural light.

Photography tip: Bring a telephoto lens (minimum 200mm, ideally 300-400mm). Morning safari gives the best golden light for photography.

Mobile connectivity is very limited or non-existent deep inside Chilla and Motichur forest zones. The dense Shivalik forest blocks most cellular signals. Finish important calls before entering the gate.

Signal is generally available near the gate entrance and in more open areas close to the park boundary. Do not rely on GPS navigation inside the park - your guide knows the routes. Carry a fully charged phone for emergencies (some signal occasionally available on ridgelines).

  • Never get off the jeep - even for "just a second" - this is the most dangerous mistake visitors make
  • Never use flash photography - it is prohibited and disorients nocturnal animals
  • Never carry plastic - the fine is ₹500 and your permit may be cancelled
  • Never wear bright colours - it alerts wildlife and reduces sighting opportunities for everyone
  • Never make loud noise - animals flee at human sound; silence is the most important safari skill
  • Never book with an unknown operator who promises tiger sightings - no one can guarantee a wild animal
