5 Zones - Which Is Right for You?
Each zone has a unique character and its own headline wildlife. Use the quick-pick below to jump straight to your zone of interest.
Chilla Zone -
Tigers, Elephants & the Ganga
Rajaji's crown jewel. Highest wildlife density. Iconic Ganga canal road.
Chilla Zone is the largest and most wildlife-rich safari zone in Rajaji. It sits on the eastern bank of the Ganga river, 15 km from Haridwar, and covers approximately 300 sq km of sal forest, riverine grasslands, and the Ganga shoreline.
The iconic Chilla canal road - an irrigation channel running through the forest - is the most productive tiger-sighting corridor in all of Rajaji. Morning safaris between 7:00-8:30 AM here give the highest tiger encounter probability of any zone in the reserve.
In December 2025, elephant safaris were resumed in Chilla Zone after a 7-year gap - making it the only zone currently offering elephant-back experiences.
Motichur Zone -
Leopards, Birds & Dense Forest
Dense sal forest with richer bird watching than Chilla. The preferred zone for birders and leopard enthusiasts.
Motichur Zone lies on the western side of Rajaji, closest to Haridwar's city centre and the Rishikesh road. The forest here is noticeably denser than Chilla - thick sal and mixed vegetation creates excellent leopard habitat, with animals frequently seen resting in tree canopy at forest edges.
Over 200 bird species have been recorded in Motichur alone. The Great Pied Hornbill, multiple kingfisher species, and colourful rollers make this zone a birder's delight. The morning light filtered through the dense forest canopy creates dramatic photography conditions.
Jhilmil Jheel -
Barasingha, Wetlands & Rare Birds
Uttarakhand's only Conservation Reserve. The last home of the Swamp Deer. North India's premier birding wetland.
Jhilmil Jheel is a wetland Conservation Reserve adjacent to Rajaji National Park - the only such reserve in Uttarakhand. Unlike the dry Shivalik forests of other zones, Jhilmil is characterised by seasonal marshes, ox-bow lakes, tall grasslands, and the Jhilmil stream.
This is the last known habitat of the Barasingha (Swamp Deer) in Uttarakhand - a critically rare deer found almost nowhere else in the state. In winter (November-February), 87 migratory bird species arrive from Central Asia and Siberia, making Jhilmil one of North India's most important birding destinations.
Jhilmil stays open until June 30 - two weeks after the main park closes on June 15.
Ranipur Zone -
Goral, Leopards & Shivalik Solitude
The most peaceful zone in Rajaji. Rocky ridges, rare Himalayan Goral, and leopards on exposed outcrops.
Ranipur is Rajaji's most rugged and least visited zone. The terrain shifts from dense sal forest to open rocky Shivalik ridgelines, creating a dramatically different safari experience from the riverine flatlands of Chilla.
This is the best zone for the Himalayan Goral - the nimble mountain goat that clings to steep rocky cliffs. Leopards here use rocky outcrops and ridgelines as vantage points, making sightings more dramatic than the tree-dwelling leopards of Motichur. The near absence of other safari vehicles makes Ranipur exceptional for photographers and wildlife purists.
Mohand Range -
Great Hornbill, Forest Birds & Scenic Drives
A birder's paradise with rugged mixed forest. Best accessed from Dehradun. Great Pied Hornbill is the signature species.
Mohand Range sits between Haridwar and Dehradun on the Haridwar-Saharanpur highway - making it the most convenient zone for visitors coming from Dehradun. The landscape is dramatically different from Chilla and Motichur - rugged terrain with chir pine mixed with sal, open ridgelines, and scenic Himalayan foothills views.
The Great Pied Hornbill - India's largest hornbill - is the signature species of Mohand. Its spectacular yellow-and-black casque and loud wingbeats make it unmistakable in flight. Multiple raptor species, including the Crested Serpent Eagle and various hawks, are frequently seen soaring over the ridgelines.
