Zone Overview

What Makes Motichur Zone Different?

Motichur Zone is Rajaji's second-most-visited safari zone - but for very different reasons than Chilla. Where Chilla is open riverine country with sightlines over grasslands, Motichur is cathedral forest - tall, dense sal trees forming a closed canopy that filters light in golden shafts at dawn.

This zone is the undisputed best in Rajaji for leopard sightings. The dense forest with mixed undergrowth and open glades creates ideal leopard territory. Early morning safaris frequently encounter leopards resting in tree canopy at forest edges or stalking deer in open patches between the trees.

With 200+ bird species recorded, Motichur is also one of Rajaji's premier birding zones - particularly for the Great Pied Hornbill, multiple kingfisher species, and forest interior birds rarely seen in the more open Chilla landscape. The combination of leopard and bird potential makes Motichur a favourite for photographers and returning visitors.

Best Time of Day
Evening safari (3-6:30 PM) is actually better than morning for leopard sightings in Motichur. Leopards become active at dusk - emerging from day-resting spots in the tree canopy and rocky outcrops. The golden hour light also creates dramatic photography conditions.
Where to Look
In Motichur, always scan tree branches at forest edges - especially large horizontal branches of mature trees at 3-6 metre height. Leopards rest in canopy during the day. Also check open glades and stream crossings at dawn and dusk - these are hunting grounds.
Follow the Langurs
Hanuman langurs have a deep, resonant cough-alarm for leopards - different from their response to tigers. When a group of langurs is stationary and alarm-calling from a tree, a leopard is almost certainly nearby. Ask your guide to drive slowly in the direction of the alarm.
Wildlife

Animals You Can See in Motichur Zone

Motichur's wildlife is different in character from Chilla - denser forest means fewer open-ground sightings but more intimate, close-range encounters.

Indian Leopard
Very Frequent - Best Zone
Rajaji's 250+ leopards find ideal habitat in Motichur's mixed forest. Frequently spotted in tree canopy at forest edges and on rocky outcrops. Evening safaris give highest probability.
Asian Elephant
Regular · Elephant Corridor
Motichur is part of the Rajaji-Corbett elephant corridor. Herds of 8-20 elephants pass through regularly. Morning safari through the forest interior often crosses elephant routes.
Sambar Deer
Common · Forest Interior
Large herds of Sambar graze in the open glades within Motichur forest. Their deep "dhank" alarm bark is the most reliable leopard indicator in this zone.
Spotted Deer (Chital)
Very Common · All Hours
Most abundant herbivore in Motichur. Large mixed-sex herds in forest clearings. Sharp "pok-pok" alarm call signals predator activity - always listen when deer bark.
Bengal Tiger
Occasional · Morning
Tigers pass through Motichur Zone but prefer the open terrain of Chilla. Occasional morning sightings at forest clearings. Pugmarks are more frequently seen than actual tigers.
Sloth Bear
Occasional · Early Morning
Shaggy insectivore spotted occasionally in early morning at fruiting trees and termite mounds at the edge of the forest. More commonly seen here than in Chilla Zone.
200+ Bird Species
Best Birding Zone
Great Pied Hornbill, Crested Kingfisher, multiple rollers, barbets, and warblers. Richer forest interior bird community than any other zone in Rajaji.
Wild Boar
Common · Forest Floor
Wild boar groups are active throughout the day rooting for food. Piglets in spring (March-April). Leopards frequently hunt young boar - boar presence signals leopard activity.
