Zone Overview

What Makes Mohand Range Special?

Mohand Range occupies the northern section of Rajaji National Park, straddling the boundary between Haridwar and Dehradun districts along the Shivalik hills. Its unique position - at a higher elevation than Chilla or Motichur - means the forest is a dramatic mix of sal, chir pine, oak, and mixed deciduous species that support a distinctly richer bird community than the lower zones.

The zone's signature species is the Great Pied Hornbill - India's largest hornbill. The distinctive yellow-and-black casque, loud wingbeats audible from 200 metres, and spectacular size make this one of India's most impressive birds. Mohand Range's mature old-growth forest provides the large tree cavities that hornbills require for nesting - something increasingly rare elsewhere.

Beyond birds, Mohand Range offers regular Asian elephant sightings as herds move through the zone on the wider Rajaji–Corbett elephant corridor. The open ridgeline sections of the safari route provide panoramic Shivalik views that are genuinely scenic even on a quiet wildlife day.

Great Pied Hornbill - India's Largest Hornbill

The Great Pied Hornbill is one of India's most spectacular birds and Mohand Range is the best place in Rajaji to see it. Understanding this extraordinary bird makes the sighting far more meaningful.

The Great Pied Hornbill (Buceros bicornis) is one of Asia's most iconic forest birds. Its hollow yellow-and-black casque - the distinctive helmet-like growth on its bill - amplifies its calls and plays a role in mate selection. Adults can weigh up to 4 kg, making every flight an event: the whooshing wingbeats are audible from 200 metres through the forest.

Great Pied Hornbills are entirely dependent on large old-growth trees for nesting. The female seals herself inside a tree cavity using droppings, mud, and food matter - leaving only a slit through which the male feeds her and the chicks for weeks. This extraordinary nesting behaviour makes them extremely sensitive to forest degradation - old mature trees are essential for their survival.

  • Listen for the loud whooping call at dawn - carries over 1 km through forest
  • Look for large fruiting fig and Ficus trees - prime feeding habitat
  • Watch for gliding flight between canopy gaps - unmistakable silhouette
  • Early morning 6–8 AM is peak feeding activity in the canopy
  • Pairs are often seen together - they mate for life and stay paired year-round

150+ Species - Mohand's Forest Birdlife

Mohand Range's mixed forest supports a far richer bird community than the lower Chilla zone. For birders, a dawn walk through the forest edge near the gate before safari start is incredibly productive.

Animals Beyond Birds - Mohand Range Wildlife

Mohand Range's mixed forest and higher elevation support mammals and reptiles not found in lower zones.

Asian Elephant
Regular · Elephant Corridor
Mohand Range sits on the main Rajaji–Corbett elephant corridor. Herds of 10–30 animals pass through regularly. Dawn and dusk are peak movement times.
Indian Leopard
Occasional · Ridge Sections
Leopards are present throughout Mohand Range. The open ridge sections of the safari route occasionally yield sightings of leopards using elevated vantage points at dusk.
Himalayan Goral
Good · Rocky Sections
Mohand's higher elevation rocky sections support Himalayan Goral. For best Goral sightings, Ranipur Zone is recommended, but Mohand has regular sightings too.
Sambar & Barking Deer
Common · All Hours
Both deer species are common in Mohand's forest. The Barking Deer (Muntjac) is particularly active in the mixed forest sections. Sambar herds graze in the clearings.
Hanuman Langur
Very Common · Canopy
Large langur groups are abundant in the Mohand canopy. Their alarm calls are the most reliable sign of predator activity. Watch for branches swaying and calls changing in character.
Bengal Tiger
Occasional · Forest Trails
Tigers pass through Mohand Range but the zone is not their primary territory. Pugmarks are seen regularly. Actual sightings are less frequent than in Chilla - always a privilege when they occur.
Wild Boar
Common · Forest Floor
Wild boar groups are active throughout Mohand. Their rooting and presence along the forest trail is a good indicator of predator activity in the area.
Indian Palm Civet
Occasional · Dawn
Nocturnal civet occasionally seen at first light before returning to daytime roosts. More frequently reported at Mohand than other zones due to the mixed fruiting forest habitat.

Birding Tips for Mohand

Bring binoculars (8x42 minimum) and arrive at the gate by 5:30 AM. The 20 minutes before safari start - standing at the forest edge near the gate - are often more productive for birds than the first hour inside. Listen for hornbill calls in the canopy from 6–8 AM. Frequently Asked

Mohand Range FAQ

Mohand Range is Rajaji's premier zone for forest bird watching, particularly the Great Pied Hornbill (India's largest hornbill). With 150+ bird species in mixed sal–chir pine forest, it offers the richest bird life of any zone combined with regular Asian elephant sightings on the Rajaji–Corbett corridor. It is also the Rajaji zone closest to Dehradun (35 km).
Mohand Range gate is approximately 35 km from Dehradun city centre and 28 km from Jolly Grant Airport, making it the closest Rajaji safari zone to Dehradun. A taxi from Dehradun costs ₹700–1,000 and takes 45–50 minutes. Dehradun visitors can do a morning safari (6–9:30 AM) and return to the city by 11 AM easily.
Mohand Range has 150+ recorded bird species. Signature birds: Great Pied Hornbill, Khaleej Pheasant, Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Crested Serpent Eagle, Mountain Hawk-Eagle, Himalayan Flameback, Lineated Barbet, Slaty-headed Parakeet, and Rufous Treepie. Best birding season is November to April. Dawn safaris give the most productive bird watching - hornbills begin calling and moving at first light.
Tiger sightings at Mohand Range are occasional - the zone is primarily recommended for birds, Goral, and elephants. For the best tiger probability in Rajaji, Chilla Zone is the right choice. Mohand is ideal for birders, Dehradun-based visitors, and those completing the full 5-zone Rajaji experience.
Great Pied Hornbills are also recorded in Motichur Zone, which has dense mature forest suitable for their nesting requirements. However, Mohand Range's higher elevation mixed forest - with more old-growth trees and a quieter environment - gives more reliable and frequent sightings. For birders specifically targeting hornbills, Mohand is the recommended zone.
From Haridwar, take NH-58 towards Dehradun (not towards Rishikesh). Mohand Gate is approximately 35 km from Haridwar, on the Dehradun side. Taxi costs ₹600–800 and takes 45–55 minutes. Note: Haridwar-based visitors may find Chilla (15 km) or Motichur (8 km) more convenient. Mohand Range is primarily recommended for Dehradun visitors and dedicated birders making a specific trip for the hornbill.
